Professional Development Secondary Arts Educators Workshop
Rattle & Roll: Clay Form and Surface Strategies (for the Secondary Art Classroom)
Summer 2025 Teacher Professional Development with L.G. Gossett
Designed for secondary art educators, this multi-day workshop focuses on building core handbuilding techniques and translating them into adaptable, classroom-ready projects. Participants will explore the construction of pinched and coiled forms with an emphasis on craftsmanship, control, and creative intent.
Key topics include:
-
Effective use of score and slip (and why we skip the needle tool)
-
Structural considerations like vents and sound holes
-
Strategies for student inspiration and learning transfer, with a focus on original work (no characters/logos)
-
Surface decoration on bisqueware, including underglaze, wax resist, washes, and layering
-
Experimental surface techniques on leatherhard slabs: mishima, slip trailing, and image transfer
Workshop dates are 7/15, 16, 17, 22, & 23 from 10-4 with an hour free for lunch.
Each session includes demonstrations and dedicated work time. These approachable forms and surfaces provide a strong foundation for more complex student projects, while allowing flexibility for differentiation and creative exploration.
