You created it, now how do you protect it?  Jay Lucas, an SMU educated lawyer and leading expert on Artificial Intelligence (AI) will explain in layman’s terms your rights as an artist, common pitfalls and how to avoid them, as well as the ever changing legalities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and what this means for you, the artist.  The class is structured, but with a healthy dose of question and answer.  Here’s your chance to pick the brain of an entertainment lawyer with over 25 years in the business.

Sessions 1 and 2: What are my rights as a creator?  We will cover facets of copyright, trademark and other rights one has as a creator.  We will delve into the protection and exploitation of your rights with real world examples.

Sessions 3 and 4: What are my rights to use the creations of others in my work?  We will cover fair use and other legal concepts regarding the incorporation of other artist’s work in your own.  We will also cover what is infringement and what is not infringement from both sides, the creator and the potential infringer.

Sessions 5 and 6: It’s all about AI, Baby!  We will do a deep dive into the horrifying but in many ways exciting changes in the art world brought about by AI.  We will also investigate the ever changing legal landscape at the forefront of AI and its intersection with the art world.  AI may not be your bag, but that doesn’t mean it won’t affect your work.

Session 7: We look at the European model of continuing rights versus the American system, which in many ways compromises artist’s rights.  We then examine how to mitigate these challenges in the American art world.

Session 8: We cover predictions for future changes in laws protecting artists both before and after the sale, what that means for both the new artist and the established working artist, and go over some contract issues including the gallery system, television and other media, and musical publishing.

Class does not meet Saturday 8/31 over Labor Day weekend.
