CLASS or WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Using mosaic techniques, create an abstract, organic piece of art using glass smalti and slate. Starting with an 8”x 8” wood panel, you will first adhere to beautiful, organically broken slate pieces, then fill in the gaps with lustrous, glass smalti tiles from Mexico. You will use wheeled nippers to cut the glass tiles to fit, creating an abstract reminiscent of a mineral strike found in nature, or even a lava flow.  No two pieces will be alike. Materials will be glued down with Weld-Bond PVA glue.  When complete, your art can be hung using a saw tooth hanger, or you can leave your piece to be framed. ($50 additional collected on site). Since we are using Weld-Bond, this piece of art is only suitable for hanging indoors.  All materials will be provided.  If you have your own wheeled nippers and tweezers, please bring them to class.

*Mosaic experience helpful but not required

Making and firing a sawdust kiln is an exciting and simple way of firing clay.  The materials you require to build a brick kiln are inexpensive, and you can get most of them for free if you look around and the pottery that you produce will register the marks made from the organic materials burning amongst the work. It has a dark, rich organic look, which is beautiful enough to rival a lot of expensive pottery glazes.

Students will build a sawdust kiln while simultaneously loading their work.

Students should bring along bisque fired work.
