Design and develop your visual dialogue as you work with multiple materials and create an art piece from concepts including imagery and symbolism. Working with acrylic paint and other items such as paper, fabric, text, found objects or packaging, play with textures and apply various mediums to create a vibrant work of art on a Gessobord.

Learn the skill of hand-eye coordination for drawing the human figure. This class will teach you how to “get it down on paper” through the use of exercises which make viewing the figure and the relationship of all of the parts make sense. You will learn the basic fundamentals of gesture, contour and line related to seeing the figure. Through practice you will gain an understanding of the basic skeleton and muscles which make up the foundation of the human form.

Make a 9” shadowbox frame in this unique collage workshop. The shadowbox, matte medium glue brushes and many other materials will be provided. But in order to make it meaningful to you, please bring an array of personal supplies, including: fabric, art and fashion magazines, hand-made papers, beads, small collage objects, dried flowers, pressed leaves, old book pages, concert tickets, maps personal photos, etc. Also, bring a lunch.

Discover one of the oldest methods of dyes and create beautiful works of art in this full day workshop. Using traditional shibori methods with synthetic indigo, students will create unique designs onto pillow cases, wall hangings, bags, scarves and much more to take home and enjoy. En Plein Air is the French word for “outdoors.” Painting in natural light became popular during the mid 19th-century during the age of Impressionism. In this one-day, beginner level workshop, you will learn basic watercolor tips and methods for creating a watercolor painting on location at one of Dallas’ hidden gems, The Valley House Gallery and Sculpture Garden. Sculpt an animal in clay, glaze the animal in the next session. Have the fun and excitement of gesturing quickly in clay, refining and finishing an animal of your choice in one session. After two or more weeks of drying the clay, the piece goes through a bisque firing. Class returns for three hours of experimenting with glazing, to finish work.

Discover the ancient technique for decorating metalwork. Work with copper while you kiln fuse powered glass onto the metal. While you create a design in wire, you will then apply the in segments. Repeated firings build up the design in layers and since firing take only minutes, you will see results right away.

If you like experimenting with your already fired ceramics, you will want to be a part of this workshop! After glazing already bisque fired ceramics, you will explore this ancient Japanese technique of firing work in an outdoor kiln and removing it while it is still red hot! Pieces will be place in bins of combustible materials then quenched to starve the piece of oxygen. This gives the surface quality of each piece a truly unique finish, displaying a variety of colors and textures when cooled. In addition, other related techniques such as experimentation with horsehair or crackle may be explored.
Please bring bisque-fired ceramic project(s) that you would like to Raku fire.
Grogged stoneware clay is ideal for this process.

During this relief printmaking workshop students will draw, carve, and print their own woodcut block in the style of master printmaker Octavio Medellin (the founder of the CAC). Octavio made multiple relief prints based on a visit to the Temple of the Jaguar. We will examine the imagery in his work as well as discuss color method techniques he used to create the work. Time permitting, we will attempt an additional printing process that Octavio used to create his work.We will carve the woodcut using relief printmaking tools (u-gauges and v-gauges). We will also print a small edition, we should be able to pull 1-3 prints by hand using various types of barens.Some pre-drawn woodblocks will be available for students.All skill levels welcome!Materials and tools will be provided.
