Do you love the fluidity and transparency of watercolor on paper but are intimidated by the medium? This is the class for you. During this introductory workshop, we will learn about painting materials, experiment with paints on paper, and review the range of watercolor painting possibilities. The day will include demonstrations and your investigations. You will be empowered to continue further explorations with this intriguing painting medium.

Tuition of $200 includes a $35 supply fee. All supplies are provided.

Design and develop your visual dialogue as you work with multiple materials and create an art piece from concepts including imagery and symbolism. Working with acrylic paint and other items such as hand-cut paper, templates simple drawings, fabric, and text, you will play with textures and apply various mediums to create a vibrant work of art on a gesso 10" x 10" x 2" deep panel. 

Supplies and painting surfaces are provided.

This workshop guides students to create a 3D piece of art using a variety of materials. The artwork fits inside a provided 10x10 2in. shadow box frame. Many different kinds of materials are provided, and students can bring their own items to personalize their art. i.e.; photos or memorabilia. Decorative and vintage papers, magazine images, and a variety of 3D objects are included. We will discuss composition, color themes and layering of items. Students are encouraged to assemble 3D items to create depth and dimension. Students leave with a framed piece of art. Very often a story develops around the art.

Discover one of the oldest methods of dyes and create beautiful works of art in this full day workshop. Using traditional shibori methods with synthetic indigo, students will create unique designs onto pillowcases, wall hangings, bags, scarves and much more to take home and enjoy. All skill levels are welcome, and all materials are provided; but students are welcome to bring any t-shirts or natural fiber materials (cotton/rayon/silk/linen) to try out as well. Wear clothes that you won’t mind getting stained.

Develop the skills of laying down bold abstract structures in various mediums, applying vivid and expressive colors, and exploring placement of the collaging materials to add depth and dynamism to paintings. Through the creative process, this workshop will help students discover and develop their unique artistic voice and painting style which can be applied to future painting.

Beginning with a demonstration/discussion of abstraction and realism in watercolor, you will learn about the exciting possibilities that exist in mixing various mediums and collaging materials. In this workshop, you will create a unique painting fueled by personal inspirations, using a variety of tools and techniques. During the painting's development, you will receive individualized attention, guidance, and encouragement that will have you finding both joy and curiosity in the development of your process.

Create a unique set of handprinted stationary for any occasion. These are great for the holiday season, Valentines, or writing to your pen pal. Using a collection of antique India woodblocks, wooden type, you will design with color, pattern, and words to create delicate floral designs or bold geometric pattern on a variety of stationery products. Non-toxic soy-based ink and all other materials and supplies are provided.

This workshop will guide you through a freeing, expressive approach to art making. Learn the many ways of layering and mark making while tapping into your natural rhythm and movement.

Monotypes are an original, one-of-a-kind, printmaking process of laying down your paint, in this case, on a heated surface with encaustic paint, and then gently laying the paper down to pick up the beautiful painting created there. You'll then have the opportunity for additional layers and working back into the piece with more encaustic paint, PanPastels or watercolor. The pieces can be used for collage material or stand-alone works.

In this 3-hour workshop, enjoy the wonders of folding paper while unlocking the mystery of Origami.  Learn what papers works best, understand how to use Origami instructions, explore the base folds and create several Origami objects. Come spend a Friday evening delving into your creative side by making a beautiful watercolor painting. With easy-to-follow steps you will create your very own colorful painted tree while also learning some great tips and tricks using watercolor paint. This workshop will begin with a painting demonstration, and you will be able to learn some simple and fun techniques to get comfortable with creating in watercolor. These skills can then be applied along with vibrant paint to capture your own colorful watercolor tree. You will leave the workshop with a painting to be proud of along with techniques that can then be used when creative expression calls to you in the future.

The second iteration of the Basic Print Sampler series, this workshop introduces the technique of Dry Point Etching. Traditionally this technique is done in copper, but we will use commonly found materials such as Mylar for the matrix. Explore a variety of tools like needles, safety pins, scratch art tools, and sandpaper to create your etching. In keeping with non-toxic practices, you will gain experience using watercolor crayon as ink. This process will allow you to create full color images and will provide you with the skills to continue creating prints at home without a press!

No experience necessary. Even if you say you can't draw.... you can trace images.

To kick off the Basic Print Sampler series, this workshop will focus on Relief Printing. Get a taste of the relief process by learning to carve into Sintra, an easy to carve matrix made of PVC. Explore a few carving techniques, learn about non-toxic soy-based inks, and print a small edition of your design. This one-day workshop allows you to experience the relief process and perhaps will inspire you to continue your printmaking experience in a Basic Relief Printmaking class

The Abstract Drawing Workshop will explore abstract and non-objective techniques, composition, and the fundamental elements of art and principles of design. Students will learn how to use thumbnail sketches to brainstorm their artwork's context, concept, technique, or style, and compose basic elements with imagination within a composition. Students will also learn how to simplify complex forms, shapes, or light to convey the essence of what they see onto paper in a composition or format. This workshop is perfect if you love combining simple forms to create dynamic compositions.

This workshop is reserved for Booker T Washington students.

This workshop combines a bit of chance-taking along with sound guidance, input on problem solving, and allows the intuitive juices to flow! We'll focus on a variety of techniques and materials which can layer with one another and allow for a broader, more confident way of approaching mixed media.

Approaches to composition, color, mark making and spontaneity will be addressed. Participants will come away with a working knowledge of materials, products, and their use and a sense of how exploration, experimentation and creating in the NOW can enhance your current practice and become the inspiration for new ideas.

You'll be experimenting with various papers and media, including Mulberry and tissue paper with Acrylic, Inks, Brusho powders, Watercolor and more. Supply info below.

Let's take a color wheel and turn it into partner piece paintings of hillscapes. These hilly landscape paintings will not only be beautiful art to display but they will also be a great opportunity to make learning a bit of color theory simple and fun. Creating a color wheel is often a wonderful place to start for all skill levels in painting when wanting to explore color mixing and color relationships.

This workshop will begin with a demonstration and an easy-to-understand discussion on the basics of color theory. We will cover primary, secondary, and tertiary colors as well as how these colors harmonize with one another. This information can significantly improve your art! From there we will take the skills learned and create beautiful daytime and nighttime hillscape partner paintings that will incorporate the colors of the color wheel.

The Transfer Drawing with Color course offers students an opportunity to explore a unique image-making process that primarily focuses on composition and color. This class emphasizes the use of Xerox transfer technique on mixed media paper to create collages, paper-to-paper printmaking, and drawing methods to compose a composition. Additionally, students will learn various composition structures while applying principles of design and elements of art to their artwork. Understanding color schemes will also be a crucial aspect of this class, and students will learn minor color theory to enhance the beauty of their assignments. The class is designed for creatives with a keen eye for composition and who enjoy using both abstract and traditional methods to create colored drawings.
